Cruising on Gran Canaria: Balancing Freedom, Respect, and Conservation
Published: 30.01.2025

Gran Canaria, and particularly Maspalomas, has long been a haven for the LGBTQ+ community, offering an environment of acceptance and freedom. For decades, the Maspalomas Dunes have been not only a stunning natural reserve but also a space where many closeted and open LGBTQ+ individuals could experience cruising as part of their holiday. However, the growing visibility of these practices in public spaces such as the beach, streets (especially during events), and the protected dunes has sparked important conversations about boundaries, respect, and conservation. At GLAY, we aim to propose a balanced approach that respects individual freedom while addressing key concerns.

The Problem with Public Sexual Activity in Sensitive Areas

Sexual freedom and intimacy are important aspects of LGBTQ+ identity and expression, and Maspalomas has historically been a unique destination where this could be explored. However, when cruising or sexual activity spills into highly visible and sensitive areas, such as public beaches, urban streets during events, or the nature reserve, it creates several challenges:

  • Environmental Damage: The Maspalomas Dunes are a protected natural area, home to rare species of flora and fauna. Leaving designated paths and engaging in activities in the dunes threatens this fragile ecosystem and compromises its preservation for future generations.
  • Legal and Social Implications: Public sexual acts, whether between gay or straight individuals, are not legal and can lead to fines or other legal repercussions. More importantly, such acts in highly visible public areas often cause discomfort or backlash from other visitors, reinforcing negative stereotypes about the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Impact on Community Image: While Maspalomas is a symbol of freedom, visible public acts may alienate potential allies, diminish progress in LGBTQ+ acceptance, and create unnecessary friction with local authorities and other groups.

Acknowledging the Importance of Cruising Spaces

It’s essential to recognize that cruising has long been an integral part of the LGBTQ+ experience for many. For some, particularly those who are closeted, such spaces provide a rare opportunity to express themselves freely without judgment or fear. This unique aspect of LGBTQ+ culture has also been a draw for tourists, making it a significant part of what attracts people to Maspalomas.

A Balanced Solution: Designated Areas for Discreet Cruising

Rather than attempting to eliminate cruising entirely, we propose a pragmatic solution: allocating a small, secluded section where a “blind eye” policy can be maintained. This approach would honor the historical and cultural significance of cruising in Maspalomas while addressing concerns about public visibility and environmental damage.

  • Controlled Areas: By designating specific, discreet sections for cruising, both tourists and locals can continue to enjoy this experience without disrupting sensitive areas or public spaces. These zones could be away from the most environmentally fragile parts of the dunes and other highly visible public areas.
  • Clear Guidelines: Signs or subtle guidelines could help inform visitors about where cruising is tolerated, reducing misunderstandings and ensuring that such activities remain respectful and discreet.
  • Collaboration with Authorities: Local authorities, LGBTQ+ organizations, and community leaders could work together to implement and maintain these spaces, striking a balance between freedom and responsibility.

Protecting Nature and Promoting Respect

While we acknowledge the cultural and personal significance of cruising, it’s vital to emphasize the importance of respecting shared spaces and protecting the natural beauty of Maspalomas. Public sexual activity on beaches, in the streets during events, or within nature reserves jeopardizes not only the reputation of the LGBTQ+ community but also the very spaces that make Maspalomas so special.

By adopting a respectful and balanced approach, we can ensure that Maspalomas remains a destination where freedom and acceptance thrive without compromising the environment or public harmony.
